Born and raised in Singapore, I am someone who cannot live a day without rice! This is probably the same for almost half of the population in the world whose staple food is rice 🙂.

The water we use to wash the rice grains can actually be used for other beneficial purposes. We found out a few more ways to put it to good use- from watering your plants to conditioning your hair.

Water your plants

The leftover rice water after cooking is actually power-packed with nutrients and protein. These properties can keep your plants looking healthy and shiny – just water your plants with rice water once a week and you will start to observe the changes.

Get clearer skin and shinier hair

Rice water is a common and popular ingredient in skincare and beauty products across Asia, especially in Korea. It is said to have amazing benefits for our skin and hair, with its toning, moisturizing and antioxidant properties.

Many of Korea’s beauty products such as face masks and face wash contain rice water. Using leftover rice water gives you quick and easy access to its beneficial properties instead of having to buy the beauty products. It saves you both time and money!

Rice water actually has a cooling and soothing effect on the skin – you can either wash your face with it or simply dab it onto your face with a cotton ball and let it sit. Your skin should feel soft and supple after use.

You can also use rice water to condition your hair if you want to improve your hair’s manageability and strengthen your hair roots. It will add volume and sheen, making your hair smooth and shiny.

Here is a bonus tip! After shampooing your hair, rub in some rice water and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it off.

Starch your white clothes

Starching your clothes is one of the best ways to make them look crisp and fresh. It helps to minimise the wrinkles on your clothes and also makes you look more presentable.

Grab your white clothes and soak them in diluted rice water for about 5 to 10 minutes and rinse it off with water. Your clothes will be easy to iron and remain creaseless, it is just that easy!

These are just a few ways you can make use of leftover rice water after cooking. Do you have any other helpful food hacks? Share them with us at mynicehome@mailbox.hdb.gov.sg or via our Facebook page.
